For an anti gun newspaper, one must admire their unwavering attention to detail and commitment to facts based reporting.
As an American gun owner, I was surprised to learn of the devastating power of a Star 1911 but that's how the NY Times rolls. No BS< no fear mongering hyperbole, just the facts, ma'am. Note the lamentation of the gun contro ladvocate who helpfully provided a quote for this article:
“I can’t think of a current gun law that would have banned the weapon
that was used in this shooting,” said Daniel Webster, a director of the
Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research.
And Baron Von Bloomberg still worries about the peasants having firearms there being too many guns out there:
Elected officials who have been pushing new gun laws pointed to the
shooting on Friday as another reason that the issue of gun violence
deserved more attention from policy makers. “We are not immune to the
national problem of gun violence,” Mr. Bloomberg said, adding, “Once
again, there’s an awful lot of guns out there.”

The article seems to be a not so subtle attempt to spread fear about what deadly lethal guns are (gasp) legal in America still. Also, nobody told the assailant in this story that he was supposed to drop from one shot of .45ACP......

Lawyer and law abiding citizen Sung Ho Hwang of New Haven Connecticut forgot about the last part while attending a Batman movie at his local theater. Folks saw his concealed pistol (small of back, he had to work to make this visible) and called the police. The cops swarmed the theater with over 20 officers responding.
Mr Hwang sounds like a reasonable fellow who articulated a credible defense of the Second Amendment and was only a victim of his own poor choice in manner of concealment. All of this could have been avoided if he had done more than pay lip service to carrying concealed. Methinks he hasn't undergone formal handgun training either given his choice of carry at the small of the back.
An OWB (Outside Waist Band) holster with its edge or more showing under a cover garment isn't covered and it isn't concealed. This is not a perception issue, it's a reality issue. If people see it, it's not concealed. I can never get over how folks will agonize on which handgun is best for them and then stride off into the sunset with a Serpa/Uncle Mike's/Galco POS holster flopping around on their hip. Go IWB (Inside Waist Band) with a proper belt. Research the styles of concealed carry out there. If you don't see what you think fits you best, try communicating with a custom holster manufacturer. They will more often than not, build you exactly what you specify. Also, their holsters will not fall apart nor allow carry in an unsafe manner.

Below is a picture of my Belgian Malinois and I finishing up a successful session of Schutzhund bite/protection training. I am running with a Glock 19 concealed in a Custom Carry Concepts Shaggy AIWB (Appendix, Inside Waist Band) holster. Comfortable, secure, and concealed. I am wel laware that the trained eye (if looking intently) could see my weapon "printing" but highly unlikely in everyday carry conditions outside of running and handling a 75lb Belgian Malinois on bite.

A professor in Arizona takes it upon himself to strike a blow for freedom and justice by ordering a free cup of water from Chik Fil A and berating the girl working the drive through who displayed far more maturity and composure than he did. He was subsequently fired from the company he works for and the college where he teaches took his staff page down from their website. In another day and age, this strident ass would have been spitting upon returning Vietnam veterans. As a supporter of gay marriage, I'm amazed by this level of pettiness.... No word yet on if his employer offered the Chik Fil A gal a job.....
The Olympics are outstanding this year. In a uniquely American story, an African American teenager who's the daughter of an Army (multiple deployments to Afghanistan) veteran and fostered (only to be near her coach) by a white family, Gabby Douglas "The Flying Squirrel" took the gold in women's gymnastics at the Olympics. Meanwhile, Kayla Harrison overcame a coach sexually abusing her as a teenager to win the gold in women's judo. She only came out publicly about the abuse after the Sandusky story broke. She would much rather people talk about her win.
Meanwhile back in the US, I took an invitation only Failure2Stop "high stress" class last weekend and it was outstanding. The degree of accountability to which we were held was offset by the hilarity and good humor displayed by the instructors and students. If you missed, you could recite poetry, sing a song, or even do calisthenics. Hits count, gents. Friend "VoodooMan" has an excellentreview of the class up at his blog. I'll post the video of me doing the "dog drill" (shooting a jug advancing upon you at a high rate of speed, popping the inlfated balloon inside of it to get a "hit") I was the first man up to shoot this drill and folks quickly learned that the best way to get a hit was to stand still. Obviously, I did not but I choose to think that shooting on the move was more realistic..... However, hits count. Also, stuff breaks. My Gen2 Glock19 had its front sight (AmeriGlo) come loose twice. The rear sight was also loose and we had to raise material on it with a centerpunch to keep it in place. Also had a few malfunctions that I think are attributable to the below plunger spring (yes, it was a newer spring). It's pictured below a brand new spring I replaced it with.
